My Mom’s Book
It’s about making websites that people will actually use
Today is my mother's birthday. A few years ago, she wrote a book. It never really caught on, which is a shame, because it’s a really useful reference for web development. The title is 5 Keys to Building a Clear & Usable Website.
There isn’t much in the way of technical detail, but the truth is that the technical part of web dev is not the same kind of challenge it used to be, and most people are lacking what she does cover, not how CSS works or how to get your content to appear. Either you know that stuff, or someone else is handling it for you.
What she does cover is how your navigation should be structured, how to use language that your audience will understand, and how to make your website useable.
My mother has worked in the plain language field since the 80s, and has drawn on that experience to create her book.
Anyway, it’s good. If you plan to create a website for yourself, you should read it. The link isn’t an affiliate link, and while I am the publisher of record (I knew my way around Amazon well enough to get it up there), since it’s my mom I pass what comes in on to her.
