An Experiment in AI Content Generation

will AI take over writing?

An AI text generator wrote the article below. I think it’s based on GPT-3, but I’m not sure. I know that they have GPT-3 based tools, but they don’t have a content warning, so I can’t be certain.

It’s pretty generic and a bit shallow, but easily as good as something out of a content mill — and it took less than two minutes to create, including signing up for the site (I used writesonic). I also used Midjourney to create the keystone image, both for the generated article, and the one at the top of the page. It’s hard to say what my total cost was — I have a monthly subscription to each service, for a total of around $30 a month combined. My cost per word/pixel is so low it’s hard to measure.

However, there is an issue — my prompt was:

Most of Your Book Should not Support the Plot
If you want people to love your story, include more whimsy

It’s an article I’m working on about why the Harry Potter books are so beloved, why the Clan of the Cave Bear was a success, basically why so many books that are beloved and successful don’t follow the advice that you should remove anything that doesn’t advance the plot. The article that the AI-generated not only didn’t include that, it directly contradicts it.

I think that in the long run, AI will be able to do what I wanted here, but it’s not quite there yet. At this point image generation is a lot further along than text generation, or at least a lot more impressive.

Anyway, it looks like my dream of hitting generate and having the AI create a novel is still a ways off — but it does create something that is a decent start point for me to edit, and I will continue to use it in that capacity (and to use image generators to blow my own mind)
